Christmas and New Years rolled around and Laila felt bad that her parents couldn’t come to Rhode Island to see her, or that she couldn’t find a train in time to take there. Instead, Laila and Theo celebrated the holidays at his apartment instead. When she asked why he wasn’t spending it with his family, he complained that they were too stuffy and stuck up, something that he didn’t want to be around this time a year.
“Anything you wanna do today?” Theo asked pouring himself a glass of orange juice.
Laila adjusted the hem on her long shirt and settled down with a bag of popcorn. “Well, I’m done with winter classes for the rest of the week.” She explained. “I didn’t have anything planned. I applied for the desk attendant job at the library last week.”
Theo leaned down to kiss her. “I think you’ll get it, you’re smart.” he said through his blonde hair that covered his eyes.
Laila popped some popcorn in her mouth. “Well, I know a lot of people applied for it, but I think I have a good shot.”
He flipped the omelet in the pan and moved it to her plate. “I wanted to ask you, and I know this is kind of soon, but my sister is getting married in like, three weeks it’s in Jamaica and I was wondering if you’d like to come with me.”
She nearly choked on her kernel. “Of-of course! I’ve never been there, I’d love to go with you. But why in Jamaica?”
Theo shrugged. “I don’t know, she wanted a tropical wedding. Not really my family’s taste, but ya know. Sorry, I forgot to mention it before. Between finals and everything I kinda forgot.”
She swallowed hard. “What do you mean, not your family’s taste?” she asked. “You don’t really talk about them. I don’t know anything about them.”
He shrugged. “They’re, uh, very posh. You’d think they were royalty, I swear they’ve lived here for like two centuries. They were upset I didn’t want to go to Yale. Hell, I was in private boarding school most of my life.”
Laila’s mind wandered. Attending Brown was the closest thing she’d ever come to boarding school. Her family couldn’t even afford catholic school. “Oh,” she said. “Well, I’d love to come.”
He smiled and held her knee. “Great, I’d appreciate it. I love having you on my arm.”
“Do you think they’ll like me?” she asked nervously.
Theo looked away for a moment. “Well, they’re not the most open-minded of people, but you’re amazing, so of course they’ll like you.”
She returned his smile. “Well, I trust you.”
Inside, Theo worried about the wedding. Laila’s sweet demeaner was no match against his mother who was known as the ice queen. One minute she would tell you how wonderful she thinks you are, next minute, she’d fire her maid if she’d missed a spot wiping glass. Everyone in his family were conservatives and he knew bringing Laila would be a mess, but he was never ashamed of having her.

For the rest of the day, the two spent the day at the local bookstore in Newport. Laila was perched in the window wearing her coziest green sweater reading a Junot Diaz novel, while Theo sat across from her devouring the latest National Geographic. The bookstore was primarily empty, but Laila enjoyed sitting in the window, she felt as though it was like being in two places at once.
As she flipped the page, she watched the way Theo’s eyes moved from page to page with such excitement. She’d wondering what sparked his attention so much, but instead she just let him be.
Instead, she flipped through chapters Diaz’s novel.
“Girl, where have you been?” a voice said.
Laila looked up and saw Paola in the next aisle over in Mysteries.
She jumped up and down and when Laila finally looked up and noticed her.
“It’s been so long! I haven’t seen you since before Halloween!” Laila said, shooting quickly over to her aisle.
Paola returned the gesture and glanced over at Theo.
“Is this who I think it is?” Paola asked playfully, pointing at Theo.
Theo stood up and greeted her. “Hey, I’m Theo.”
“The famous Theo.” Paola said dramatically with a fake British accent. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Theo chuckled and remembered that this was the friend that Laila always chatted about.
The girl sat down in empty seats and talked about their time since they’d last seen each other.
“I wish I were you like and had a cute boyfriend to steal me away every weekend.” Paola teased, loosening her thick knit scarf.
Laila leaned in and shooed her away. “Shhh, that’s not all we’ve been doing, girl.”
“Ooh does that mean what I think it means?” Paola’s green eyes grew as big as saucers. “Did you do the thing?”
“Sure did!” Laila whispered.
They giggled and gossiped like schoolgirls while Theo looked up at them ever so often with amusement. He saw a new some of her, a livelier, less timid version of her and that made him all the happier to xslot Yeni Giriş be spending more time with her.

That night, the two had a night out for the first time in weeks and they opted for Sal’s Seafood, which was popular because they had the best coconut shrimp in Providence.
They ordered their usual fried coconut shrimp with fries and cokes and settled into a booth in the back of the small, nautical restaurant.
“Still can’t believe we passed everything,” Laila sighed, pouring a mountain of ketchup on her fries.
Theo stole some ketchup from her plate. “I know, I wanted to drop that class so much.”
Laila laughed and ripped the tail from her shrimp. “It’s been a good semester because of you, I didn’t think I’d find someone like you when I came up here,”
He leaned in and whispered to her, “Yeah, I just wanted to let you know that I—“
“Alfond, how are you, man?” Theo’s former frat brother, Jared said with a snarky tone, sliding into their booth.
Jared and another brother, Brett entered the restaurant and immediately made the place feel tense. He knew them but he wished he hadn’t.
Brett sat next to Laila, looping his arm around her shoulders.
The restaurant suddenly felt cramped, not like the romantic oasis it was before. Laila felt the change in the air, too.
Theo clenched his jaw and gave Brett a death stare.
“Get your fucking arm off her.” Theo whispered, putting his hands on the table.
Brett grinned as Laila tried to wiggle her way out of his grip. “Come on,” he said. “We all love a little bit of Hershey.”
Theo jumped up and stared down at him from across the table. “Get away from us before I rip your fucking arm off.”
The restaurant grew quiet and stared at their table with hesitation. Both Brett and Jared looked at each other as Brett slowing removed his arm from Laila’s shoulders.
Brett swallowed and both he and Jared looked at each and stood up.
“You could never take a joke,” Jared spat with a menacing tone.
Theo shrugged and crossed his arms over his chest. “Don’t ever touch my girlfriend or any girl ever again.”
Jared’s eyes met Theo’s with anger. “You know this isn’t over, not even close.”
“I’m ready when you are.” Theo said, cracking his knuckles.
Brett patted Jared on the back and motioned him to leave the table, before shooting a grin at Laila.
“See you later, gorgeous.” Jared shot over his shoulder.
The two settled at their table a few tables down. Theo felt his heartrate lower as he sat down and looked at Laila, who looked frazzled.
“Are you okay?” he said reaching for her hand across the table.
She nodded quickly and took a sip of water. “I’m fine. I just don’t like what just happened.”
Theo looked over at her and squeezed her hand. He hadn’t gotten that angry in a long and he was sorry that Laila had to see him like that, but he knew his anger could get worse. But he knew from now on he had to stay on his guard.
“Let’s just enjoy our night,” he said, popping a fry in his mouth. “let’s go for a walk afterwards, if you want.”

The waves on the beach kissed the sunset as Laila and Theo walked hand in hand in sweaters at nightfall. Their fingers braced the cold together, but this was Theo’s favorite time a year. Time stopped at the beach and this was always his favorite place.
“I wanted to tell you something when we were back at the restaurant.” Theo said, squeezing her hand.”
Laila looked over at him and stopped walking mid-step. “Is it something bad? Should I be worried about us?”
Theo adjusted a curl that had fallen out of place and placed it behind her ear. “No, not at all.”
She exhaled and closed her eyes for a moment. “Phew. I didn’t think I handle another disappointment, but I guess—”
“I love you.” he replied, cupping her face.
Laila’s soft face turned to shock, and she felt stomach erupt with butterflies. “Really? Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I’m sure.”
“I-I love you too.”
Theo felt his mouth tug into a smile. “I’m so glad to hear that. I swear, when I first saw you in the bakery that day, I knew I had to make you mine.”
Laila felt tears roll down her face and onto Theo’s hands. “I can’t believe this is happening. “I’ve never been in love before.”
He leaned in to kiss her gently, but it grew with more passion as he reached her jawbone and then her neck. She sighed and braced her arms around his neck and looked over at the sunset which bled its soft, orange light.

About a week later, Theo convinced Laila to go dress shopping for his sister’s wedding since Laila didn’t feel as though her own sundresses weren’t formal enough.
“Come on, it’s okay.” He said.
Laila stood by her closet with frustration as she searched through each garment to find the perfect dress for the wedding. Nothing was formal enough and everything was too casual. When she packed for the semester, she didn’t think to bring a ballgown.
“Come, it’s okay,” he said, guiding her away xslot Gir from her closet. “Let’s go downtown, we’ll get you a new dress.”
She swatted him away. “No, no. It’s too expensive. Maybe I can put together a cute skirt and blouse combo.”
Theo chuckled. “Don’t worry, we’ll find something.”
Away in Newport, the pair landed in a small French boutique that carried designer clothing. None of it was Laila’s style. She’d like to think she was adventurous with her wardrobe, but the last nice thing she wore was her teal graduation dress from Macy, but now she was in a store that had clothing as high as a car payment.
She pawed through the hangers in the clearance looking for a deal when she saw a cute but simple baby pink maxi dress.
“What about this?” she asked, holding up the hanger.
Theo was a few feet away in another section, looking at the more formal gowns. He shook his head in disgust when he saw the dress she was holding.
Laila sighed and returned the hanger to its rack. When she walked over to Theo, he held up a gorgeous floor length lavender tulle dress with an open back and halter neckline.
“I like this one.” He said, holding the garment. “It suits you.”
Laila stared at the dress with curiosity. She hadn’t seen a dress so beautiful since she went to prom and for this occasion, she knew she needed to look regal*. She held the price tag in her hand and gasped.
“That’s almost $300!” she whispered to him.
Theo shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. We need to get you some shoes too.”
Theo disappeared to the shoe section and returned with a pair of white suede strappy sandal heels. She surprised at his taste.
“Wow, good taste.” She said.
“Well, I’m used to this.” He replied, walking to the register. “I helped my sister pick out her debutante gown a few years ago.”
At the register, Theo paid for the outfit with his Mastercard and their total was nearly $500. Laila’s eyes nearly popped out of her head at the total and Theo brushed it off like it was nothing. They left the boutique and walked through the posh* streets of Newport. Every so often, Theo would reach down and kiss her hand as they walked and admired the beautiful late fall day.
They stopped at Starbucks for hot tea, the fall chill had started to pick up a bit and they needed shelter.
“Is there anything else you wanna do or go to today?” he asked, stirring honey into his hot cup.
Laila nodded and fanned her tea to cool it down. “I don’t know, I’m good for right now.”
Theo looked at his watch for a moment. “I made an appointment with my barber for noon, so I guess I’ll head over to that unless you’d want to join?”
She giggled and reached over to his wavy blond locks. “You’re cutting off your angel waves boobear?”
“Nah, just a trim and a shape-up,” he said, smiling. “We’re leaving tomorrow and I just wanna look nice. My mom’s a real stickler for that.”
She took another sip of her tea. “Yeah, I understand that. I’ll paint my nails tonight.”
“You sure?” he asked. “I can take you to a salon or something.”
She held her hand up in protest. “No, stop spending your money on me, it’s okay. I like painting my nails, it’s calming.”
Theo gave her that same, loving smile. “It’s fine, honey. Just wanna keep you happy.”
“Your wallet has nothing to do with my happiness, I hope you know that.”
The next morning, Laila and Theo took the short ride to Warwick to Theo’s barbershop. It was on a short side street in the middle of a Hispanic working-class neighborhood. When we entered the shop, it was lined with barbers who looked to be of Hispanic descent. One of the older men in the front greeted him.
“Ayee mijo!” the man said, walking up to us both. “It’s good to see you. And who is this?”
Theo gave the man an affectionate hug. “It’s good to see you too, Mr. Ortiz! This is my girlfriend, Laila.”
“Hello,” she greeted with a wave.
Mr. Ortiz looked at Laila and gave her a soft handshake. “Laila, ahhh, muy bonita.”
She giggled and returned the exchange. “Thank you, thank you.”
“Come on back, guys.” Mr. Ortiz said.
Mr. Ortiz led Theo to his chair and put a black cape around him as Laila sat in a waiting chair beside the two. Mr. Ortiz looked at him in the mirror and rested his hands on Theo’s shoulders.
“So what can I do for you today?” he asked.
Theo made hand motions to his head. “I wanna keep the side part, and I want the top tapered and the back faded, just a bit. I want it to look neat, my sister’s getting married in a couple days.”
Ortiz looked in the mirror and at Theo’s locks. “I can do that, just like the old days.”
Laila sat back with a magazine as Theo got his haircut. Every so often she was look over and watch the process, but most of the time, she let him have has own time.
After about twenty minutes, Theo was back with freshly washed shorter hair with a side part and a small pompadour. He looked more cleaned up, but still had that sexy look about him. Mr. Ortiz brushed the clipped hair xslot Sitesi from his neck and undid his cape.
Theo looked at himself in the mirror and run his fingers through his hair. “Damn, I like it.” He said.
Mr. Ortiz looked proud of his work. “Yeah, you look good, man. Come on, let’s ring you up.”
**
Back in the car, Laila kissed Theo and giggled a lot, admiring his new cut. “He did a really good job. I haven’t seen you with short hair since we started dating.”
Theo returned her smile and pulled out of his parking space. “Thanks, baby. Yeah I’ve been going to him since I started school. I was never really close with my dad, so Mr. Ortiz was almost like a second father.”
They drove down the street and continued through the town.
“After the incident happened with my frat brothers, I didn’t have a lot of people to turn to, so he was there for me,” he explained. “I really appreciated that.”
Laila nodded. She understood what that felt like. “So do you still talk to them, your frat brothers, I mean?”
“No, after the trial they pretty much blackballed me, only a few of them stayed close.” He replied. “I still have friends on the debate team, though. But I don’t think about that much, I know I did the right thing.
She nodded and thought about it. She would never know what it was like to go through what those girls went through, but she could certainly empathize being powerless.

Back at his apartment, Theo was full of love and lust by the end of the night. Laila was on all fours over the bed that night as Theo admired her backside and stroked his cock. He always loved this sight, her perfect, heart shaped ass right in front of him.
He positioned himself at her tight opening and pushed in. Laila exhaled and moaned as Theo began pumping in and out of her wet hole. He kept hold of her hips as he went faster, feeling her velvet core around his cock. Laila grabbed hold of the sheets with her lips parted, in pure bliss.
Theo reached up her and rubbed her clit a few times, forcing her eyes to roll back in her head. Laila erupted with loud screams and she felt herself cumming all over his cock. Theo didn’t let up, he increased his pace and at the mass of curls on her head, waiting for his grip.
“Do you like it, baby?”
Laila nodded threw her face into the sheets.
Theo slapped her ass felt himself nearing soon. Just then, he pulled his cock from her drenched pussy and emptied himself on her right cheek.
They were both breathless at this point. Before wiping the cum off her ass, Theo leaned down on his knees where his tongue entered her pussy.

The day before the wedding, Laila and Theo raced to the airport bright an early at 4A.M with luggage in hand as they rushed through the terminal. After a long run-in with TSA, the two sat in waiting chairs as they searched through Laila’s luggage.
One of the agents confiscated a shampoo bottle. “Ma’am, this is not allowed on flights.”
Laila sucked her teeth. “What do you mean? It’s travel-sized.”
The agent put the item in a basket by the scanner. “It has to be clear so we’re able to view it for weapons or explosives.”
She crossed her arms and looked over at Theo, who looked groggy.
“It’s okay, babe, we’ll just get another one while we’re there.” Theo explained.
She crossed her arms. “This is going to take forever.”
“I’ll call my mom to tell her what’s up.” He said, pulling out his phone from his pocket.
Theo dialed a number and waited for his mom to pick up. “I’m sorry mom, yeah we’re boarding soon.” He explained. “Laila had some issues with luggage, but we’ll be out as soon as we can. I know, I know. We’ll see you then, okay, love you too, bye.”
To be safe, the agent examined the rest of her luggage and purse. He also scanned her with a metal detector. Laila thought it was unnecessary and violating, but she was her first flight and she wasn’t sure what was normal anymore. By the time they boarded, they were the last onboard and rushed to their seats in first class. Laila exhaled as she settled in her seat and took deep breaths as she watched the plane depart from the runway
“That’s right hon, inhale and exhale.” He said, patting her knee. “We’re going to be fine, it’s just a plane.”
Laila closed her eyes and continued her breathing exercise. “Okay, I’m sorry, my nerves are a mess.”
The plane slowly ascended into the sky and the pair watched as their island became smaller and small below them. A flight attendant came by and offered them bottled water and peanuts.
Theo refused the peanuts but took a few sips of water. He looked over at Laila, who sipped her water and was becoming visibly calmer. He leaned over to kiss her and nuzzled her neck.
“So how long until Jamaica?” she asked,
Theo checked the time on his phone. “A little less than eight hours.”
She rested her head on the headrest and looked out the window. “Guess I’ll nap for a bit. I guess I’ll see you in a few hours.”
“See you, honey.”
**
It was a little after 3 P.M by the time they landed in Montego Bay. Theo called for an Uber ride the airport in destination to the resort. They rode with the windows down and they smelled the salty air by the sea. It had that same seaside Rhode Island scent, but something about it was different.
